TYPICAL DAY IN YOUR LIFE?
Wake up, skin care regimen, iron my white shirt and prepare for the days appointments!
WHAT WAS YOUR PATH TO BECOMING A BRIDAL DESIGNER?
From the age of 5 or 6 I had a fascination for bridal gowns, or I guess gowns in general. I used to wrap myself in my mums flannel sheets in front of the mirror and watch the way the fabric would drape on my body. I studied fashion design and textiles, majored my last year in couture and as soon as I graduated I found myself complexly immersed with my own brand. I had clients requesting to have gowns designed/created and eventually was recognised by others within the industry which set the standard of our brand.
ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE ASPIRING TO BECOME A FASHION DESIGNER IN THE BRIDAL INDUSTRY?
I’d definitely recommend creating a business plan, after all it's a business. Set up some goals and also be completely true to yourself, your standards and aesthetic. It’s really easy to be caught up in what everyone else is doing but you should always be setting yourself apart from other designers and making your own mark.
ARE YOUR GOWNS MADE-TO-ORDER OR DO YOU DESIGN COLLECTIONS?
All of our gowns are made to order and designed specifically for each bride. Brides typically book in 14 months in advanced and we begin designing/creative roughly 7 months before the big day!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE ELLY SOFOCLI BRIDE?
She is strong, she is fashion forward yet maintains a classic and sophisticated aesthetic. She is confident of her own style and appreciates quality and refined details.
WHERE DO YOU TURN TO FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR DESIGNS?
Inspiration can be found anywhere, anytime. When returning from an overseas holiday, my designs are a little more effortless and romantic but after time spent in Melbourne, you become a little more rigid and the modern pieces start to take shape again. There are two facets to our brand which can be heavily detailed/embellished or super modern where we focus on line and sculptural elements, these are two aesthetics are a mirror of my personal style. Designers are forever evolving and refining so the same thing happens when we design for our brides.
ANY ADVICE FOR BRIDES-TO-BE WHO ARE TRYING TO CHOOSE A DRESS FOR THEIR BIG DAY?
Choose a gown that represents your personality, overall style and one that you’ll look back and think “Yes, that’s still me.”
ANY BIG BRIDAL TRENDS ON THE HORIZON FOR 2020?
Detachable pieces are definitely a favourite in the coming year, whether its tulle based with lace detailing for the more romantic bride or voluminous matt silk capes for the modern bride, clients love the idea of having a real “bridal” moment with added length, and then being able to transform their outfit into something a little more maintainable for the rest of the night.
PROUDEST MOMENT SO FAR?
Simply put, working with amazing brides, having a fabulous team and successful company would have to be it.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR ELLY SOFOCLI?
Well, after much anticipation and demand we will be working on a few ready to wear pieces which will be available globally for our international brides!
FAVOURITE WHITE NAKEDVICE PIECE?
