Two girls, based in Melbourne with a love for recycled garments. Meet Scarlet and Ella, the minds behind The Drobe Melbourne - a carefully curated collection of vintage pieces often with designer tags that you can only dream of finding yourself. Hand picked and sourced from all over the world, what started as a side hustle has quickly grown into a small business. Get to know the girls as they chat to us about their appreciation for hand selecting vintage pieces and how they transformed their small idea into a successful business.
We both grew up in Melbourne, and it’s still home!
TYPICAL DAY IN YOUR LIFE?
We both have additional work outside of The Drobe but spend a lot of time together at our office working on the business! Our office is based in Brunswick, Melbourne. A typical ‘Drobe’ day consists of sourcing or receiving in stock, photographing it, washing/altering the garments, postage and website or page maintenance.
WHEN WAS THE DROBE FOUNDED?
The Drobe was founded in April 2013 when we were 16 years old.
WHAT WAS THE IDEA THAT STARTED THE DROBE?
We have both always loved shopping so decided one day to sell our garments to make room in our wardrobes for more clothing! When our original Instagram @scaz_ellas_drobe took off, we started shopping for the purpose of re-selling and that’s how our business grew to become what @the_drobe is today.
THE MOMENT YOU KNEW YOU WERE ONTO SOMETHING GOOD?
Early entry into the market definitely helped us define our brand as one of the first Instagram pages to sell second hand pieces. After our first Pop-Up shop in Melbourne, we The Drobe had a lot of potential seeing how quickly our sale sold out.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE KEY TO BUILDING YOUR BRAND ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
The key to building our brand on social media has probably been the consistency in our photos and models (only ever Scarlet & Ella) and the uniqueness of our items. We post a wide variety of vintage pieces that are always styled and paired with accessories.
WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR PIECES?
Our items are sourced from many different places. We have picked up pieces from all around the world and have sourcing connections in America. We also purchase items locally in Australia.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN SOURCING VINTAGE?
First and foremost, we look for quality and uniqueness! We like to offer special one-off pieces
ANY TIPS FOR VINTAGE SHOPPING?
Finding great items takes time and patience and the ability to visualise the clothing in a styled outfit. Sometimes what's on the hanger doesn’t show the item's potential so its important to have an open mind and creative eye!
FAVOURITE PIECE YOU’VE SOURCED TO DATE?
It's hard to choose one piece from over the years but we loved one pair of perfect high waisted pinstripe pants, a vintage ribbed DKNY jumper and a mini beige Prada Tessuto handbag. Often it is very hard to part with the items!
BIGGEST PINCH YOURSELF MOMENT?
Selling out our Pop-Ups are always very surreal. At our last Pop-Up shop in Cremorne we woke up at 6am and had received photos of customers lining up since 4am.
However, our biggest pinch yourself moment would have to be when we went to Los Angeles to purchase stock and meet with suppliers. We ended up hosting private viewings for high profile customers that live in LA. It was awesome to be running our business in a city outside of Melbourne and meeting with our customers face-to-face.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE DROBE?
We have some exciting projects in the works for The Drobe. We host Pop-Up shops quarterly but due to COVID-19 we have decided to take our sales online so that our international customers can experience the sale too. We are hosting another online Pop-Up shop in late August.
